The Pirates Web. Prepared in July 2000 for presentation to the technology industry, to government enforcement agencies, and to Congress.

The report was never presented, or submitted, let alone acted upon. I take 100% responsibility for that decision (even though it was heavily influenced by comments made directly to me by federal judges and by my own attorneys). This was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made in my 30-year career in the audio visual, graphic arts, and technology industries. I think about it every single day. I grieve over how many hard working creative people may have lost their jobs over the past 7-8 years.

Less has been done during this present Bush administration to curtail this white collar crime epidemic than was done in any 8 year period since I have been an adult. Worldwide, the piracy crime epidemic is totally out of control. And some of the most admired technology companies here in the U.S. are right dab in the middle of the action. It is quite shameful, to say the least.

The government doesn't seem to have a clue what to do.

The last 4-5 pages of this lengthy report made specific recommendations as to how we could potentially solve this enormous problem. I try to always make such suggestions when I find something as dreadfully wrong as this piracy epidemic is in our society. I feel badly for not being more forceful. I am determined to make sure the new administration (and I have already begun by starting to communicate with the active candidates) is at least conscious of the enormous damages these copyright infringement and counterfeit crime families have caused, and will continue to cause, this country if we do not address these piracy web issues soon.
