All About Copyrights
An essential read for anyone who uses the Internet on a
regular basis. Written in plain language ... not legalese
Although Mr. Riddick is not an Intellectual Property lawyer, he
thinks like one. He is able to explain complex copyright laws, especially
those pertaining to the Internet, in simple, easy to understand
language. Mr. Riddick sites real life examples and experiences to
re-enforce each and every point he discusses. From registering a
copyright, protecting it against piracy, recognizing and avoiding
"copyfraud", to publishing on your own social networking
or small business web site safely and securely, this book covers
it all ... even the new laws that go into effect in 2008!
In today's world, we are all potential publishers. That means we
all have to understand copyrights, and what should be done and what
should be avoided. Mr. Riddick uses "short stories" to
illustrate each of his points of view. His style is both entertaining
and highly informative. In late 2007, he was the first small business
owner to be invited to join the new Copyright Alliance in Washington
D.C., a copyright advocacy group, think tank, and direct link to
Congress.
Mr. Riddick knows the "do's" and the "don't's "
of our copyright laws, having registered thousands of copyrights,
and been forced to go to court on numerous occasions to protect
his company's property. He even took one case all the way to the
U.S. Supreme Court, in a classic modern day battle of David vs.
Goliath. Mr. Riddick has spent the majority of his business career
developing copyrighted works, publishing them for his own company
and others, and trying to help educate Internet users around the
world about the "ins and outs" of this ever evolving,
yet hugely important, subject.
Mr. Riddick is one of the few non-lawyers with this detailed breathe
of knowledge about copyrights. He was trained at IBM in the 70s
and has been in the advertising, audio-visual production, software
development, and electronic graphic arts content development and
publishing industries his entire career. He knows copyrights!
"Because we were, and still are, a small graphic arts development
company operating out of beautiful Central Virginia, and not the
Silicon Valley, I have had to get my law degree from the "school
of hard knocks", states Mr. Riddick, proudly, in a recent speech
directed to Congress. "But I am glad I did. We have been able
to make a difference in many, many lives, and protect millions and
millions of people around the world from making some of the mistakes
we did, and suffering severe consequences they didn't even know
were coming."
Everyone needs to better understand copyrights. "They are one
of our true remaining national treasures. A right granted to us
all in the Constitution. No other emerging country even comes close.
In fact, many other cultures don't respect their artists, writers,
musicians, bloggers, designers, illustrators, movie-makers, poets,
journalists, and cartoonists, like we do here in this country. But
I bet if they understood the dire consequences of a world without
creativity, free speech, and innovation they would."
So if you read or write blogs, belong to a social networking site
like Facebook, MySpace or Linked-In, regularly search the Internet
through web site search engines like Google, Microsoft Live, AOL,
or Yahoo, develop any copyrightable material on your own, or for
others, have your own domain name and address, or are thinking about
getting one, this book is for you.
Learn all about copyrights. If you're like me, you'll find this
book "fascinating" and you'll probably save yourself a
lot of potential headaches and heartaches along the way.
